Practical Semester
Six months of real project work in a 14-person team. You build, take ownership, and learn how a platform business runs — from concept phase to launch.
You are studying computer science, media design, communication design, business administration with a marketing focus — or something close to that — and you are looking for a place for your practical semester. Not the kind where you sort spreadsheets for six months, but the kind where you build real projects.
Westwerk is a platform for web and design projects plus our own products (Log+Key, FleetBench, Future Product Days). 14 people, mixed backgrounds, a clear commitment to long-term client relationships and honest work. We take on one practical-semester intern every six months — and treat the internship for what it is: your first serious professional setting, and our chance to get to know you.
What you’ll do
Depending on focus:
- Engineering: you work alongside our senior developers on platform features (Vue/Nuxt, Astro, NestJS, Directus) or on marketing sites with Webflow. Inside the sprint, with your own tickets from day two.
- Design: you design UI components, brand applications, or editorial layouts in Figma. With senior guidance, but real assignments.
- Marketing: you help shape our outbound strategy, write content for the site (like this one), support events, and build operations tools for our SaaS.
Across all three: no coffee rounds, no spreadsheet tasks, no “let’s see what we have for you.” You get real responsibility, a clear brief, and a dedicated mentor.
What you bring
- A degree programme that allows or requires a practical semester
- At least 3 months of availability, preferably 5–6
- Willingness to talk with real clients — as a peer
- Portfolio samples (design) or code examples (engineering) that show you enjoy sorting things and building
What you don’t need: complete senior-level skills, prior agency experience, or a perfectly polished portfolio. We invest in you; in return we expect curiosity and clarity.
What we offer
- Compensation at the upper end of the practical-semester range — ask us for specifics, we say them openly
- Hybrid setup: Aachen office 2–3 days a week, remote days flexible
- Modern equipment: MacBook Pro, external monitor, software licences
- A senior mentor: one person you speak with weekly, one-to-one
- A concrete outcome: concept work, shipped features, a portfolio piece, a documented learning field
- Path to a working-student role if both sides want to continue
How to apply
Send an email to hallo@westwerk.ac with the subject “Practical Semester”. In the body:
- Which area interests you (engineering, design, or marketing)
- When you can start and for how long
- Degree programme, university, whether the semester is mandatory
- Link to a portfolio (design) or code examples (engineering) — unfinished work is welcome
- One paragraph: why you want to work at a smaller agency
A CV is helpful but not required. We don’t need cover-letter boilerplate.
We respond within 5 working days. If the setting fits, we schedule a 30-minute intro video call — and ideally a half-day on-site after that.
